To Derrida, that’s the wrong question—it’s not whether animals can think, but rather if they can feel. At just over a minute long, it creaks into action and a warm, friendly bassline accompanies the words “I know now what I want” repeated over and over again. The surreal feeling conveyed by the album cover and the cozy production of “Memory” never disappear, even as the album progresses. All recorded at home, almost exclusively solo, and, until recently, all digitally self-released DSU has been highly received having been nominated as one of the albums of the year by Crack, The Line of Best Fit and Time Out. Over the stunning melodies of “Miracles,” he reaches into a whispy falsetto as he considers starting a family.

Recorded prior to DSU and previously only available via Alex’s Bandcamp account, the albums have now been professionally mastered and are being made commercially available for the very first time. If the sounds are blown out, as on “Blessing,” or if room tone leaks in, like on the intro to “No Bitterness,” it feels intentional, not accidental. In April 2017, he adopted the “(Sandy) Alex G” moniker as a stage name in effort to not be confused with the female artist of the same name.maybe he realized what he could have had with sarah may have been worth having while they “messed around,” but it is too late? An atmosphere that implores nostalgia and feeling of a certain time and place flavored with some lines that are out of left field and give more color.

Though his writing has always toed the line between autobiography and autofiction, on God Save the Animals it seems as though the players in his stories—fictional or not—are growing wiser with time. American musician Alex G has released nine studio albums and two EPs, as well as two live albums and a soundtrack album. Save for the brevity of some of the songs, Trick doesn’t feel at all like a compilation, but a thoroughly satisfying follow-up released just a few short months after last year’s phenomenal DSU.The following year, Giannascoli worked with Frank Ocean on his albums Endless and Blonde, providing guitars and arrangements for several songs.

Over its 40 years in business, PIAS has grown to be one of the largest independently-owned music groups in the world, carving out its own in-house recorded music division PIAS [Recordings]. His fifth album, DSU, was released on Orchid Tapes in 2014, and his subsequent releases have been with the label Domino Recording Company. This is fairly standard chill Gen Z bedroom music, but the highlights aren't to be ignored and I can see why some people latch onto this album, it has a comforting quality, just doesn't do much for me personally. Intervista a (Sandy) Alex G: "Il mio processo creativo è far girare i dadi, fino quando ti dici: oh eccolo! There have always been one-off artists that have been able to gain large followings without record label backing; however, technological advances and their affordability, as well as the internet’s democratizing effects on distribution, have led to a small wave of artists who grew from releasing songs in their bedrooms into becoming household indie artists. But between Trick and DSU, Alex had to rely on his own instinct and honest self-appraisal of his abilities. Whale” and “Adam” have incredibly childish and quirky lines, but a lot of other Alex G subject matter is also in the realm of invoking a childlike sense of wonder and feelings of adolescence. On March 2, 2017, Giannascoli announced that his second album with Domino, titled Rocket, would be released on May 19 and shared the first two singles, "Bobby" and "Witch". But God Save the Animals does feel like a liturgy of sorts, one that encapsulates Giannascoli’s belief in the healing power of animals and Auto-Tune.

Recorded at Hive Mind Studios in Brooklyn, NY, with the help of producer/arrangers Mike Buckley and Vincent Chiarito (both members of Charles Bradley's Extraordinaires) and crack team of a-list musicians, his upcoming album blends heavy arrangements and introspective lyrics with sophistication, leaving the listener in a blissful wash of wonderment. Some of the year's worthy records that you may have missed, including albums by Madlib and Freddie Gibbs, eclectic pop upstart Shamir, infectious Swedish punks Makthaverskan, Japanese sample whiz Lee, and many more. In his later life, the French philosopher Jacques Derrida trained his critical lens away from abstract conceptions of human language and toward his pet cat.Trick by Philadelphia’s Alex Giannascoli, recording under Alex G, is not a new album per se - it is a collection of material previously available through Bandcamp, where Alex G made a name for himself, remastered. After self-releasing various albums, EPs, and singles on Bandcamp from 2010 to 2012, Giannascoli's popularity spread through word of mouth, blogs, and reverence by other musicians.
