About this deal

Most 4G and 5G home broadband routers will allow you to connect an external antenna. However, this functionality isn’t available on some devices like the Huawei AI Cube B900. It also isn’t possible to use an antenna with most Mi-Fi devices like the Huawei E5573bs-322. We should note, we live in an area with very good 4G signal, near a 4G mast. You may not see speeds quite as fast as the maximums we were able to achieve with your Three 4G Hub. It is important to note though, your latency will most likely be higher using a 4G broadband router than if you were using a regular home broadband connection. And to get the best possible ping, we recommend always using an Ethernet cable to connect your computer or games console to the router, otherwise your latency may be less consistent.

This router connects to the internet using the Three 4G network, just like your mobile phone. It uses a SIM card to get online, rather than using a traditional fibre broadband connection. There’s no need to have a landline if you’re using 4G home broadband. For this reason, you might be able to cancel your landline service if you don’t need it for another reason (e.g. for making phone calls). Once we found the best spot, we did a number of speed tests to assess the performance of the device, over Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Ethernet speed test result Upgrading your 4G router may improve the performance of your service by as much as adding an external antenna to it. You want to get the biggest SIM card – the standard-sized one. Be careful to avoid punching out the smaller micro or nano SIMs from the card. The router is tall but still has a compact design. It measures 180 x 170 x 30mm, meaning it doesn’t take up much space at all. One of the great things about such gadgets is that you don’t need a landline or an engineer visit, and they’re typically – as in these cases – little more complex than just plugging them in and switching them on. It’s a bit of a hassle to find the perfect spot in your house for it, to get the best possible speeds. That means the Three 4G Plus Hub will be better able to take full advantage of Three’s 4G network (especially in areas with faster 4G+ connectivity), so assuming you live in such an area, your average speeds might more consistently be around 100Mbps, rather than 50Mbps.

It’s important to note, we live in the perfect area to use the 4G Plus Hub. The nearest 4G mast is very close by, in an elevated position, and we also live in an area with very little 4G congestion. Plus, you can also use the 4G Hub on the go, if you’d like. You can use this 4G router to get online anywhere in the UK, including while you’re on holiday, which is great. I see that apart from certificates, there is a blob of data as part of this file which can be the actual config data.

Three 4G Plus Hub overview

If you’re using the Vodafone GigaCube, Huawei B618 or Huawei 5G CPE Pro router, you’ll need a SMA to TS9 adapter for use in conjunction with these antenna. Our 4G Plus Hub arrived in a Three branded box. Once you open it, the first thing you see is the router itself. To get set up, all you need to do is put the SIM card into the router, plug it in, and turn it on. You don’t need to wait for an engineer to come and visit to get started, like you might do with a traditional broadband provider.

Before deciding what to do, it’s worth isolating these two factors. For instance, place your device right next to the router or attach a wired Ethernet cable to remove any impact from Wi-Fi signal loss. Since we reviewed the regular 4G Hub a few months ago, it could also be that some upgrades were made to the 4G LTE network in our area, which contributed to the higher speeds.I wanted to see if I can make it work with non-Three networks ( Vodafone in my case ) and saw that even though the LTE signal lights would be green, the internet light would keep on blinking and internet never worked. Normally, a 5 metre cable is recommended for most installations (the router should be moved and placed as closely as possible to the antenna to accommodate this). Due to signal losses from the cable, having a much longer cable will cancel out any benefit of having an outdoor antenna. Connector Type To get a better idea of how fast the 4G Plus Hub will be, you can use the Three network coverage map. Type your postcode into the map, and look for good indoor and outdoor coverage where you live. The Three 4G Plus Hub is clearly the better of these two routers, but the main difference is simply that it will generally offer more consistently high speeds, despite not topping out any higher. Given the speeds on offer from the Three 4G Hub, and how easy this device is to set up, we think this router is very good value for money.
